Information on Pregnancy Termination
Chemical Abortion
A non-surgical abortion, called "chemical abortion" or "medical abortion," can be done between the 5th and 7th week of pregnancy. This procedure requires taking pills which cause the uterus to contract and expel the embryo. It involves several days of bleeding.
There are many possible risk factors with this type of abortion, including excessive bleeding, heart palpitations, and infection. There are also some contraindications (some women are not good "candidates" for this type of procedure because of their medical history).

The most common type of abortion is surgical abortion. This procedure can be done beginning with the sixth week of pregnancy. It involves a local, twilight or general anesthetic (being "put to sleep"), dilation of the cervix (opening up the mouth of the uterus) and suction/surgical removal of the fetus. There are several possible risk factors with this type of abortion as well, including cervical damage, excessive bleeding and infection.
